The song’s endurance has raised eyebrows in the Western music industry, particularly because it achieved this momentum without traditional promotion. At the time of release, Jimin was serving his mandatory military duty in South Korea, which barred him from any income-generating activities. Radio play was minimal, and his only promotional appearance came via a pre-recorded performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Jimin is no stranger to making history: he remains the only soloist ever—and the second artist overall—to debut a non-English song at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with Like Crazy from his debut album Face. His group BTS first set that precedent with Life Goes On.
