The Rock Kid Who Hid His Face So the Last Name Could Not Do the Talking

How Taiwan’s emo-rap rocker split into 阿夜 and Marz23 — and why the alias, not the family credit, is the real catalog.

Lin Zhirong is 34, which in Mandopop years can look like a late start until you remember he signed at fifteen. Onstage he answers to two names. 阿夜 is the co-founder, vocalist, and guitarist of TRASH. Marz23 is the solo catalog: emo rap, rock, electronics, and the kind of diary entry a four-piece cannot carry. About 320,000 people a month press play on Spotify. The song that still leads the pile is “我不是饒舌歌手,” more than twenty million streams of a man insisting he is not the thing he is clearly doing.

The latest chapter is his own. May 27, 2026, he put out “觀自在.” It did not come from a brand deck. It came from the quiet after November 22, 2025, when he played “不簡單的演唱會” at Taipei Arena — first solo date in that room, a reserved seat for his late father, Andy Lin, Faye 詹雯婷 walking out on “不簡單的歌,” TRASH members in the building with a surprise. Then vacation. Then a messy ordinary afternoon that made him notice how hard he had been clutching every bad thought. He tried watching the feeling instead of fighting it. “Like fireworks,” he said. Ignore it and it is gone.

He used to write like a coach. Then he admitted the pep talks treated symptoms. Same room, same loop, same voice coming back. “觀自在” is the correction: scripture read as a practical manual, trap drums and alt-rock under a hook everybody already knows how to shout, then a drop so empty it feels like the thought actually left. A Hong Kong fan had mailed him a Native American flute for his birthday in September 2025. He played it at the Arena. The single keeps that gift in the last stretch. 2026 also added “Our Dream” and “Super Daddy” to the stack. The year is not a reinvention so much as a man who finally trusts the alias enough to get still in public.

The House He Came From Was Already a Stage

Born September 23, 1991, in Taiwan, he is the son of comedian-host-actor Andy Lin and Chen Hui-e, and the younger brother of singer Zowie Lin 林吟蔚. First television face: “麻辣天后宮,” a junior-high kid walked onto a variety set. The contract followed. Ads, modeling, the second-generation starter pack. He has said for years that the work did not fit, and that rooms introduced him as Andy’s son before they heard a note. Comparison with other entertainment kids was the weather, not an event.

Nana changed the aim. His sister put the film and the manga in front of him. He has described the aftertaste as a third eye opening — clothes, volume, the whole rocker posture landing in the blood. He took her unused classical guitar and practiced eight hours a day at home. The kid who liked fighting stopped going out. Mostly self-taught, then a few teachers when he needed to get better, not when a company told him to. Visual-kei makeup and early tattoos drew the usual schoolyard noise. He has thanked “that sissy from twenty years ago” in public since, which is a polite way of saying the insult became fuel.

TRASH Was the First Name That Felt Like His

Around 2009, eighteen years old, he met drummer 魁剛 at a band contest. An earlier TRASH lineup had already split from fights. First jam at a Ximending rehearsal room and they basically wrote the first album. He became 阿夜: voice, guitar, co-founder. Gongliao Honghaiyan in 2012. Years of Golden Melody nominations that did not convert. In 2025 the band took Best Band at the 36th Golden Melody Awards, fifteen years in. He thanked family from the stage like someone who still keeps score with the dead.

The band is not a side quest. He has told interviewers the long game is still getting more people to listen to rock, and that TRASH stays inside that lane on purpose. When the Arena solo offer arrived, TRASH already had its own stadium calendar. He sat on the decision for three months because he did not want to wreck his body. Bandmates’ reaction: “very hard.” He still did the date. Two careers, one throat.

The Breakthrough Was a Joke That Stopped Being a Joke

2016, still 阿夜, he dropped a short slap at anonymous commenters: “請問你哪位.” 2018, “I Hate You” sat at the top of StreetVoice’s hip-hop chart with other early tracks. That is when the second name locked in. Marz23 was supposed to be faceless enough that the music could not be waved away as nepotism. Emo rap with a rock spine. He has said the two identities pull: 阿夜 wants the whole room to win; Marz23 has to put the private ugly stuff on a beat.

Warner Music Taiwan signed him in 2020. Singles “Break Me Down” and “23,” then the debut album “23” that August — eleven tracks stitching 2018–2020 hits plus three new ones. The Legacy Taipei show sold out on announcement. The hinge was “我不是饒舌歌手.” He has talked about burning savings until the account held about NT$3,000 so he could shoot that video. After a decade of almost, the song did the thing the last name never could. People heard him before they filed him.

The catalog after that is the map. “最美的風景” with 莫宰羊. “陪你失敗” with 寺二, the Hong Kong favorite he has tied to that city’s mix of pressure and release — Hong Kong crowds also started the bra-throwing habit that followed him on tour. “情勒” with ØZI, a 2023 Hito top-ten Mandarin track. Album “不遠處” in 2023, which earned a Best Mandarin Male Singer nomination at Golden Melody 35. He walked the carpet with his wife, Lea 鄭又寧, and their infant son, aiming to be the coolest person there rather than the handsomest. Hito named him Most Explosive Singer in 2024.

2025 kept both lives in motion. “癡情暈船仔.” “魅惑天空 2Ø25.” “不簡單的歌” with Faye, now the song at the top of his popular list after the title track that made him famous. He played 500趴 weeks after the Arena with leftover stadium voltage. He also keeps showing up on anime-scene bills, including a July 2026 “我們的武道館” date at SUB Live in Nangang. If you remember Nana started this, that booking is not a cameo. It is homework.

He Stopped Performing Certainty and Started Performing Attention

By his own accounting he used to be a “糾結倫.” Spotify RADAR 2025 had him saying he trusts the road more now, that music is a vehicle for the message, and that the rest can go to the universe. After the Arena he talked about shrinking desire, twelve kilos gone, eating less like a sport. “觀自在” is that shift in a single: allow the world to be loud, allow the thought to yell, and do not grab it.

Family remains the subplot that will not leave. Andy died in 2018. Every milestone still gets reported to a memorial tablet. A reserved Arena seat. A comment under “不簡單的歌” about a father who once bought an ice cream after Andy’s show, and a son who years later bought one for his own kid after hearing Marz23. That is the soft version. The sharper one is the kid who spent twenty years being told the door opened because of the last name, then emptied the account, hid the face, and wrote a song that refused the genre stamp people wanted to give him.

Put This On When You Need Volume With a Pulse Check

Marz23 is not café Mandopop. “我不是饒舌歌手,” “Break Me Down,” and the TRASH set are driving music and gym music if the room allows yelling. “陪你失敗” and “不簡單的歌” are for the night you want company without a lecture. “觀自在” is for the commute after a bad meeting — thinking music that still moves, a little cultural immersion if you want a sutra hook you can actually shout, and a reminder that stillness can have drums.

If you came for the band, the alias is where he tells on himself. If you came for the alias, the band is still the spine. At thirty-four he is loud enough for Taipei Arena and quiet enough to leave a flute in the last minute of a single. Being Andy’s son got him in the building. Marz23 is how he stayed.
