Maria, a Philippine action movie, is easily a triumph and loss for Philippines cinema. After Fernando Poe Jr. passed, he seemed to have taken the action genre with him because there has been a scarcity of action movies in the last decade but Maria is a gem and also a little sad. It has, probably, the cleanest and most fluid action sequences but it’s sad to think about the fact that it does not offer something unique in an international level. We could have used Arnis or Eskrima, a martial arts truly our own.
