Within days of its announcement, ARIRANG, the upcoming full-length album by BTS, recorded multiple historic milestones across global platforms.
ARIRANG became the fastest album to surpass 4 million pre-orders and the only album to reach that figure in under one week. The album also debuted at No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Countdown Albums Chart, marking the first album ever to do so, driven by 1.49 million global pre-saves. The momentum has extended across platforms. On Apple Music, ARIRANG ranked at the top of the Coming Soon chart, ahead of releases by Bruno Mars, Joji, and the forthcoming Gorillaz album.
These figures were achieved without a traditional promotional rollout. No official teaser schedule, album cover reveal, or large-scale media campaign has been announced, indicating demand driven by anticipation accumulated during BTS’s nearly four-year hiatus.
Global Travel Searches Surge Ahead of World Tour
As BTS prepares to resume world touring for the first time in four years, international travel interest in South Korea has risen sharply. According to data released by Hotels.com on January 22, inbound travel searches for Seoul increased 155% compared to the week before the tour announcement. Searches for Busan, a confirmed tour stop, surged 2,375%.
By country, Seoul-related searches rose most sharply in Japan (400%), followed by Taiwan (260%), Hong Kong (170%), and the United States (95%). For Busan, Japan recorded a 10,545% increase in searches, with Hong Kong up 7,100%, Taiwan 1,275%, and the U.S. 835%.
Busan Moves to Stabilize Accommodation Prices
In response to the projected influx of visitors, the City of Busan convened a joint public-private meeting on January 22 to address accommodation price volatility ahead of BTS’s concerts scheduled for June 12–13.
The meeting, led by Vice Mayor for Future Innovation Sung Hee-yeop, included representatives from city departments, district offices, the Busan Tourism Organization, and accommodation and consumer affairs groups. Measures discussed included expanding the supply of public lodging, offering incentives to businesses, conducting inspections, and launching self-regulation campaigns.
Due to limitations on direct price controls, the city examined practical countermeasures, including the temporary opening of public facilities such as university dormitories and youth training centers during large-scale events. Busan also plans to expand its Good Price Establishments program, streamline designation procedures, and increase incentives and promotional support for participating businesses.
City officials stated that a permanent, sector-specific response manual will be developed to enable rapid intervention during future large-scale events.
Seoul Prepares for Historic Gwanghwamun Performances
In Seoul, preparations are underway for BTS’s full-group comeback performances at Gwanghwamun Square, scheduled around the album’s release on March 20. According to the Cultural Heritage Administration, the Cultural Heritage Committee conditionally approved HYBE’s request to use and film at Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun, and Sungnyemun.
Approval includes conditions requiring further review of cultural heritage impact. Filming is expected to take place on palace closure days. Media facade events using LED projections may also be held along Gwanghwamun’s walls and Sungnyemun’s fortifications.
HYBE indicated that the event will be live-streamed to 190 countries via a global OTT platform, with an estimated 50 million viewers expected to encounter Korean cultural heritage through the broadcast.
Police and City Authorities Coordinate Crowd Safety
With projections estimating over 200,000 attendees, Seoul authorities and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency have begun coordinated safety planning. Police held preliminary and follow-up meetings with HYBE to discuss crowd management, emergency response, and transportation measures.
Authorities are considering temporary non-stop train operations at nearby subway stations—including Gwanghwamun, Gyeongbokgung, and City Hall—before and after the performance to manage crowd flow. Overnight crowd buildup is also being factored into planning.
Final safety measures will be reviewed at the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Safety Management Committee meeting scheduled for February 24, involving police, fire departments, and other relevant agencies.
A National-Scale Cultural Event
The Gwanghwamun performances will mark the first time a single artist has been granted permission to hold a standalone concert at the square. Officials have noted that the event represents a significant opportunity to promote South Korea internationally, given the scale of global viewership and tourism interest.
BTS will release ARIRANG on March 20, their first full-length album since Proof (June 2022), marking 3 years and 9 months since their last group release.
