AI’s expansion into K-pop is moving remarkably quickly.
Google recently put BTS at the center of a major Gemini campaign connected to the group’s ARIRANG era and tour activities. That collaboration was already controversial among some fans, particularly environmental activists concerned about the energy and water demands associated with generative AI.
Some of those arguments haven’t even finished playing out, and Weverse has essentially responded with: How about some more Gemini?
The global fandom platform is now beta testing Weverse AI, an artificial intelligence-powered search assistant built using Google’s Gemini model. The feature is designed to let fans search the enormous amount of information accumulated across Weverse without manually digging through years of announcements, livestreams and merchandise listings.
And whatever your feelings about generative AI may be, this particular application could be extremely useful.
Before Weverse AI, Gemini Was Already Following BTS on Tour
The new feature makes more sense when placed alongside Google’s growing relationship with BTS and HYBE.
Gemini was previously named the official AI Companion of BTS THE CITY ARIRANG – BUSAN, the citywide festival held alongside BTS’s June concerts in Busan. Google integrated Gemini into experiences intended to help both Korean and international fans navigate not just BTS activities, but Busan itself.
That provided an interesting real-world demonstration of what an AI assistant could potentially do for concert tourism.
Visitors could use Gemini for personalized itinerary planning, ask questions about local attractions and Korean culture, and receive information through voice interactions. Gemini was also incorporated into the BTS THE CITY digital stamp rally on Weverse, where fans could complete interactive missions while exploring the city.
At Haeundae Blueline Park, the partnership went even further. Fans riding a Gemini-branded Sky Capsule could scan a QR code, use Gemini to decorate a photo from their trip and then print it as a photo card at a nearby Gemini experience booth.
HYBE’s THE CITY model can surround stadium dates with pop-ups, merchandise stores, exhibitions, restaurants, tourist attractions and other activities scattered across a metropolitan area. For a fan flying into an unfamiliar city—possibly an unfamiliar country—that can mean navigating an enormous amount of information.
An AI assistant could theoretically become the layer connecting all of it.
agine arriving for a BTS concert and asking: Where is the merchandise pickup? What’s happening near my hotel today? Which BTS THE CITY locations can I reasonably visit before doors open? How do I get to the stadium? What Korean restaurant is near this pop-up?
That is a much more practical use of AI than asking it to manufacture another picture of Jungkook with six fingers.
Now Gemini Is Moving Inside Weverse
Weverse AI takes that idea and applies it directly to fandom information.
During the beta, fans will be able to search three major areas: community announcements, Weverse Live broadcasts and merchandise on Weverse Shop.
Instead of opening different sections of the app and searching individually, users can simply ask questions through the AI interface.
Looking for a particular piece of merchandise? The assistant can provide information about price and availability, including pricing in the user’s local currency.
Trying to remember where an announcement appeared? Ask.
But perhaps the most useful feature involves Weverse Live.
Fans will reportedly be able to describe a moment they’re trying to find from an archived livestream, and Weverse AI can return a timestamp linking directly to that portion of the video.
For newer artists, that’s convenient. For artists with years and years of livestreams accumulated on the platform, it could be transformative. Anyone who has ever thought, Which three-hour livestream was it where he said that one thing for approximately eleven seconds? may suddenly have considerably more free time.
The answers will also provide links back to the original material, an important feature because users can verify what the AI is telling them rather than simply trusting an automatically generated answer.
This Isn’t Really About AI Creating Things
Much of the current fight over generative AI has centered on creation: AI-generated music, images, writing, videos and concerns about replacing human creative labor.
But that’s not primarily what Weverse is doing here. This is AI being used as an information and navigation layer.
We already have more digital content than any human being can reasonably process. An artist can have thousands of posts, years of livestreams, hundreds of announcements, multiple tours and enormous merchandise catalogs.
The problem increasingly isn’t finding more content. It’s finding the one thing you actually need inside the mountain of content you already have.
And Google itself is pushing Gemini in precisely this direction. The company has integrated Gemini-powered conversational tools into services such as YouTube, where users can ask questions about videos and jump directly to relevant moments. Google said more than 140 million users engaged with its Ask YouTube feature on the watch page in June alone.
Weverse AI effectively brings a similar concept into the fandom ecosystem.
The BTS Partnership Starts Looking More Strategic
That also makes Google’s BTS campaign look less like a conventional celebrity endorsement.
BTS gives Google access to an unusually demanding test environment: a massive global fandom traveling between countries, consuming huge volumes of digital content, purchasing merchandise, navigating events and communicating across languages.
For Google, that’s an extraordinary use case for demonstrating what Gemini can actually do. And for HYBE and Weverse, AI potentially solves a problem created partly by their own success: there is simply too much information.
Weverse says it eventually wants the assistant to search additional areas, including artists’ posts. If that expansion continues, fans may eventually interact with years of fandom history conversationally rather than navigating it chronologically.
That is potentially much bigger than a chatbot.
Fans May Still Have Questions About the Cost
None of this makes the environmental debate disappear.
Generative AI requires substantial computing infrastructure, and concerns about data-center electricity consumption and water use are legitimate subjects for discussion. Google’s partnership with BTS has already pushed some of those concerns into K-pop fandom spaces.
But there’s also an important conversation to have about what we’re actually using AI for.
There is a difference between generating endless disposable content because we can and using AI to translate, organize, search and navigate enormous quantities of information that already exist.
Weverse AI is a particularly good example of the latter. Fans don’t necessarily need AI to create another BTS song. They may, however, appreciate AI finding the exact 14 seconds of a four-year-old livestream they’ve been searching for since Tuesday.
And whether everyone is emotionally prepared for it or not, that’s probably where one of the most important developments in AI is happening.
AI isn’t only becoming something that creates content for us.
It’s increasingly becoming the infrastructure through which we find, understand and navigate everything humans have already created.
And K-pop—with its enormous quantities of content, highly engaged digital communities and increasingly global concert tourism—may turn out to be one of the most logical places to test what that future looks like.
