The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles is set to immerse visitors in the whimsical, ocean-drenched world of Studio Ghibli’s beloved 2008 film Ponyo with a new dedicated exhibition opening soon.

Titled Studio Ghibli’s PONYO, the exhibition runs from February 14, 2026, to January 10, 2027—an 11-month celebration of the film’s hand-drawn animation magic. Located on Level 2 in the Wanda Gallery, it follows the museum’s successful 2021 Hayao Miyazaki exhibition and shifts focus to the enchanting story of a goldfish princess named Ponyo (originally Brunhilde) who longs to become human after befriending a young boy named Sosuke.

This marks the Academy Museum’s second major showcase of Studio Ghibli artistry. The exhibition highlights the traditional animation techniques that give Ponyo its fluid, painterly charm, exploring themes of transformation, human connections, joy, and harmony with nature—classic hallmarks of Miyazaki’s work.A standout feature is an exclusive donation of original materials from Studio Ghibli to the Academy Collection. Over 100 hand-picked items will be on display, many appearing in North America for the first time. These include:

  • Original hand drawings and sketches by Hayao Miyazaki
  • Art boards
  • Posters
  • A Studio Ghibli animation desk

These artifacts offer a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the meticulous hand-drawn process behind the film’s magical water worlds and flowing aesthetic. To bring the underwater wonder to life for all ages, the exhibition incorporates interactive and immersive elements:

271096
  • An interactive animation table where visitors can create their own animated sequences
  • A playful, ocean-themed immersive environment that younger guests can step into, evoking Ponyo’s enchanting sea realm

The museum emphasizes hands-on experiences designed to inspire creativity and nostalgia, making it especially family-friendly. Admission to the exhibition is included with general museum entry (with free access for children under 17). The Academy Museum is open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 6067 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Special programming around the opening includes a Ponyo screening in 35mm on February 14, 2026, plus guided tours, workshops (such as stop-motion animation inspired by the film), and member previews starting February 13.For fans who fell in love with Ponyo’s dreamy ocean vibes and heartfelt story, this exhibition promises a deep dive into its artistry and spirit.
