Literary icon Haruki Murakami is gearing up to drop his 16th novel, and it’s already generating major buzz. Titled The Tale of KAHO (夏帆), the book will hit Japanese shelves on July 3, 2026, published by Shinchosha in both print and digital formats. Clocking in at 352 pages, it marks his first full-length novel since The City and Its Uncertain Walls (2023 in Japan, late 2024 in English).

A Fresh Perspective: Woman as Sole Protagonist

What sets this one apart? For the first time in a Murakami full-length novel, the central character is a woman — and she carries the entire story. Twenty-six-year-old Kaho, a picture book author, finds herself trapped in a bizarre, surreal world and must find her way out. The novel expands on a four-part series Murakami originally published in the literary magazine Shinchō between June 2024 and March 2026, including the standalone short story “Kaho” that appeared in The New Yorker in 2024 (translated by Philip Gabriel).

Expect the classic Murakami cocktail: dreamlike realities bleeding into the everyday, enigmatic encounters, quiet introspection, and that unmistakable sense of existential drift. Longtime readers can look forward to familiar touches — stray cats, jazz nods, parallel dimensions, and protagonists wrestling with loneliness and meaning in an off-kilter universe.

English Translation Timeline

As with most of Murakami’s major works, the English version will take a bit longer. Philip Gabriel, one of his longtime translators, is expected to handle the project, but no official release date has been announced yet. Based on past patterns (The City and Its Uncertain Walls took roughly 18–20 months), international readers might see it sometime in late 2027 or 2028. In the meantime, the original Japanese edition and that 2024 short story offer a solid preview.

At 76, Murakami has described recent writing as a form of “resurrection” after a serious illness that hospitalized him and caused significant weight loss. This new book feels like a statement — a return to form with a fresh lens.

Whether you’re a longtime fan who’s reread Norwegian Wood a dozen times or a newcomer curious about the hype, The Tale of KAHO looks set to deliver another immersive journey. Mark July 3 on your calendar, clear some shelf space, and prepare for that classic Murakami magic: the kind that lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the final page.
