The Recording Academy has announced a series of rule changes and new categories for the upcoming Grammy Awards. From the introduction of Best Asian Pop Music Performance to expanded recognition for songwriters and new eligibility standards for albums and digital releases, the updates reflect the evolving realities of today’s music industry. Here’s a breakdown of the most significant changes and what they mean for artists, creators, and Grammy voters.

New Category: Best Asian Pop Music Performance

One of the most notable additions is Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a category created to recognize excellence in recorded Asian pop performances across multiple genres, including K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other Asian popular music styles.

The category focuses on the performance and recording rather than the songwriting or composition itself. This distinction is important because a song consists of two separate creative elements:

  • The composition, including melody, lyrics, and songwriting.
  • The recorded performance, including vocals, rap delivery, instrumentation, arrangement, and interpretation.

For example, a song with exceptional lyrics and songwriting could be recognized in songwriting-related categories, while a different song with a particularly strong vocal or musical performance could be recognized in a performance category.

According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., the category was introduced in recognition of the growing influence and popularity of Asian music in Western markets.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify:

  • The recording must make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.
  • Songs performed entirely in English are not eligible for this category.
  • Eligibility is based primarily on musical style and cultural tradition rather than the nationality or ethnicity of the performer.

While the category is designed to evaluate performance, Grammy voters often consider broader factors such as artistry, popularity, cultural impact, and the overall reception of a recording when casting ballots.

Additional New Categories

The Recording Academy also announced several other new awards, including:

  • Best Latin Song
  • Best R&B Collaboration/Duo Group Performance
  • Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance

What Is Traditional Pop?

Traditional pop differs from contemporary pop music in both style and production.

Rather than emphasizing electronic production, EDM influences, or modern pop arrangements, traditional pop often features:

  • Big band orchestration
  • String arrangements
  • Piano-driven compositions
  • Jazz-influenced harmonies
  • Broadway-style vocal performances
  • Classic vocal techniques and live instrumentation

The category falls within a broader field that includes jazz, traditional pop, contemporary instrumental music, and musical theater recordings.

Album Eligibility Threshold Reduced

The Academy has also lowered the percentage of new material required for albums to qualify in album categories.

Previously, at least 75% of an album’s content had to consist of newly recorded material. Under the new rules, only 66% must be new.

The change reflects modern release strategies, where artists frequently issue:

  • Deluxe editions
  • Expanded editions
  • Repackaged albums
  • Multi-stage album rollouts

For example, an album containing 15 tracks would remain eligible if 10 tracks are new and five were previously released, since the album would exceed the new two-thirds threshold.

Songwriters and Composers Will Receive Grammy Statuettes

Another significant change expands recognition for songwriters and composers.

271096

Under previous rules, certain album-category wins awarded Grammy statuettes primarily to artists, producers, engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers. In many cases, songwriters and composers did not receive the same level of formal recognition.

Beginning with the new rules, songwriters and composers of newly written material on winning albums in most genre album categories will also receive:

  • Grammy statuettes
  • Achievement certificates

The change brings their recognition more closely in line with other key contributors involved in creating award-winning recordings.

Digital-Only Releases Gain Expanded Eligibility

The Recording Academy has also updated eligibility requirements for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album.

271096

Previously, these categories largely required a physical release format such as CDs, vinyl records, or boxed sets. Under the new rules, digital-only releases are now eligible if they include the necessary supporting materials.

Best Album Notes

Digital releases can now compete if they include materials such as:

  • Historical essays
  • Research notes
  • Track-by-track explanations
  • Recording histories
  • Session information
  • Archival photographs
  • Scholarly commentary

Best Historical Album

Digital-only projects featuring:

  • Previously unreleased recordings
  • Restored recordings
  • Career-spanning collections
  • Historical compilations

are now eligible as well.

Awards in this category typically recognize producers, restoration engineers, archivists, and researchers responsible for preserving and presenting historical recordings.

Grammy Voters Can Participate in More Categories

The Recording Academy has also expanded voting privileges for eligible members.

271096

Under the previous system, voting members cast ballots in:

1- The six General Field categories:

  • Album of the Year
  • Record of the Year
  • Song of the Year
  • Best New Artist
  • Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical)
  • Producer of the Year (Non-Classical)

2- Up to 10 additional categories across no more than three fields.

Under the new rules, qualified members may now vote in up to 15 genre categories beyond the General Field.

To gain access to the additional categories, members must:

  • Submit professional credits by a specified deadline.
  • Participate in the Academy’s verification process.
  • Receive approval through the Academy’s Ballot Plus program.

The Academy says the change reflects the increasing number of music professionals who work across multiple genres and disciplines throughout the industry.

A Broader Shift in the Music Industry

Taken together, these updates reflect how the music industry continues to evolve. The new rules address the growth of global music markets, the rise of digital-first releases, changing album release strategies, and expanded recognition for the creators who contribute to recorded music. The changes will take effect for upcoming Grammy eligibility periods and future award ceremonies.
